Borders Machinery Ring Limited

Labour

Labour is now a growing part of the Ring business. Reducing fixed costs has become a priority in most businesses. More farms are now hiring labour from the ring when they need it, rather than having a full time employee all year round. BMR subsidiary company Borders Area Services Ltd holds a Gangmaster Licence for labour supplied through this company.

PRE - APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME - Is there an Industry Demand in the South of Scotland?

Our fellow machinery ring Ringlink up in North East Scotland has over the last 5 years pioneered a Land-Based Internship Programme to address the difficulties of recruiting young people into the rural sector. The work-based scheme is run in collaboration with SRUC over 26 weeks including a 3 week residential induction which involves a range of activities and certified training. Farmer mentors play a crucial but rewarding role on the placement with a huge responsibility not only providing the young person with practical knowledge but providing an environment to encourage a good work ethic as well as social and communication skills. There is now an ambition to role the scheme out nationally through local machinery rings if demand can be demonstrated to Scottish Government.

Pre-Apprenticeship Format:

DEVELOPMENT: Programme starts in June with a 3 week induction

TRAINING COURSES: Up to £1500 of training, an element tailored to individual needs

MENTORING: 26 weeks full-time employment, typically working 40hrs per week on a suitable rural business

HANDS ON APPROACH: Earn while you learn in the rural sector. Payment in accordance with Scottish Agricultural Wages Board (SAWB)

If you are interested in finding out more about the scheme either as a candidate or a farmer mentor please let us know at the BMR office on 01896 758091
