FORUMS AIM TO PROVIDE HELP WITH SUCCESSION PLANNING

A program of forums have been announced by The Succession Alliance, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to championing a progressive, inclusive approach to farm succession.

Succession planning is one of the most important — and often one of the most difficult — conversations facing farming families today. Too often, these discussions are delayed until it’s too late, leading to conflict, uncertainty, and lost opportunities.

“That is why we have launched the Succession Families Forum,” says Michael Mack, Chair of The Succession Alliance. “This new national programme is designed to give families the tools, time, and expert support they need to plan properly — not only for the future of the business, but also for the wellbeing of the family itself.”

Michael adds that succession doesn’t happen by chance; it happens by choice. With the right structure and guidance, these conversations don’t have to be negative or divisive. They can be constructive, confidence-building moments that strengthen both relationships and resilience on the farm.

The Succession Families Forum is a six-month programme starting with attendance at one of two workshops – Lanarkshire (2 October) or Warwickshire (4 October). These workshops give families time away from daily pressures to understand the key elements of succession planning and hear from leading agricultural and legal experts as well as share experiences with other farming families facing the same challenges.

Afterwards, families join five monthly online sessions, each led by recognised industry experts including Matt Swain, Heather Wildman, Andy Guy, and Michael Mack. These sessions will cover issues such as asset planning (what to pass on, when, and to whom), fairness versus equality (balancing business needs and family relationships), conflict resolution (addressing disagreements before they escalate), business structures (legal and financial frameworks for smooth transition) and retirement and evolving roles (making space for the next generation)

By the end of the programme, every family will have the skills to create a customised, actionable succession plan tailored to their farm and circumstances.

The cost of the programme is £500 per family which covers the full six-month programme and includes one in-person workshop, five online sessions, expert facilitation and tailored resources.
